Statement on Advancing ºÚÁϳԹÏ꿉۪s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Initiatives

Sadly, we continue to see hate crimes and violence against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders ‎‎(AAPI) that have led to deaths and increased uncertainty, suffering, and fear for individuals, their ‎families, and communities across our country. ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø strongly condemns racism, sexism, harassment, ‎hate crimes, injustices, and any other form of discrimination, mistreatment, or inequality. ‎
Documenting these tragedies and finding ways to reduce hate and its consequences – indeed, ‎understanding public opinion – are the job of researchers like those in our ranks. The need for high-‎quality data and research has never been greater. The range of areas in which research is needed ‎continues to grow, fueled by the pandemic and by violence toward marginalized and vulnerable ‎individuals.‎
ºÚÁϳԹÏ꿉۪s Inclusion and Equity Committee (IEC) was established by this year’s Executive Council to ‎create, implement, and maintain programs that promote the inclusion of diverse ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø members and ‎ensure that members of marginalized groups receive equitable opportunities, recognition, and ‎support within the organization. The IEC will work to infuse inclusion and equity strategies into all ‎facets of ºÚÁϳԹÏ꿉۪s organization and practices including:‎
- Culture and communication
- Outreach, with a focus on talent-pipeline planning and membership diversification
- Learning and professional development ‎
- Affinity groups
- Nominations and awards
- Metrics and accountability
We are eager for ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø, led by the IEC, to develop and implement the intentional strategies that will ‎help strengthen our commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. We continue to welcome your ‎thoughts and ideas in these efforts.
